Stock head-unit amplifiers typically deliver around 18 watts RMS per channel, enough for daily-driver volume, but well below what good aftermarket components are designed to receive. Gains are set with the speakers' RMS rating in mind so the amp runs in its clean range and the system has real headroom. Class-D efficient mono amps start around 500 watts RMS for daily-driver bass; 4-channel amps for full-range speaker upgrades start around 75 watts per channel.
